Becoming a Radio Amateur

Becoming a Radio Amateur

Becoming a Radio Amateur

You may have heard about them, or maybe not. But who are radio amateurs exactly? And why am I telling you this?

Well, I want to become a radio amateur! Let me answer the first question.

Who Are Radio Amateurs?

Radio amateurs, or “hams,” are people interested in a fascinating hobby involving radios and communication. While it may seem like just “people talking to random people on the radio,” there’s so much more to it:

  • Building antennas and transceivers (a combination of a transmitter and receiver).
  • Exploring different ways of communication, like:
    • Voice communication
    • Text-based communication
    • Computer-assisted QSOs (radio amateur connections).
  • Experimenting with technology, propagation, and even Morse code.

There’s always something new to discover!

My Journey

I’ve already had a chance to make a couple of QSOs with my friends over at Omega (OM3KFF) Radio Amateur Club, and I can confirm it´s a lot of fun! When I first sat down, it was incredibly strested out, but that stress quickly faded away.

More QSOs = Less stress. 😊

Update: I Passed the Test!

Fast forward a few months—I passed the test! 🎉 Officially it happened 23.4.2024 and my license arrived into my mailbox at 6.6.2024, so that is my official date of becoming a fully licensed Novice-class radioamateur :)
